NES Controller Adapter Tutorial

Turn your Nintendo Controller into a PC Joystick for your NES PC.

This tutorial assumes that you are making this adapter for a NES PC.

Parts list:

  1. DB-25 Crimp-Type D-Sub Connector (276-1429)
  2. DB-25 Non-Shielded D-Sub Hood (276-1549)
  3. Heat-shrink Tubing [Optional] (278-1611)
  4. Printer cable, Phone cord, anything with at least 4 wires about 22 gauge.
  5. Power Adapter, from an old cpu fan. Molex.

Tools list:

  1. Crimp Tool, Most standard wire stripers have these.
  2. Needle nose plyers, or Medical Hemostats.
  3. Some small heat source, lighter or hair dryer.

On to the building:

  1. Remove the screws holding the controller ports onto the NES case.

  2. Remove the ports from the Case, and set aside for later.
  3. Whatever wire you use, we only need 13". (14" recommended.)
  4. Strip both sides of the wires. One side should be 1/4" and the other should be 1/2"
  5. Crimp the Pins onto the 1/4" side of all 4 wires.
  6. For my adapter i used an old printer cable. Which has colored wires. I used the White, Orange, Purple, Yellow wires from this cable. If your cable has these colors then you should place the Pins into the DB-Sub in this order. White=2, Orange=3, Yellow=10, Purple=12
  7. Use the needles nose plyers, or Medical Hemostats, to pull the pin all the way into place.
  8. Pickup the controller ports. Short wires = port 1, long wires = port 2.

  9. Cut off the end of the wires on the ports.
  10. Strip the ends to 1/2".

  11. Wrap the two 1/2" ends of the wire from hole 12 and the Purple wire together then slip a heat shrink tube over the wire, and shrink it over the bare wires causeing them to be sealed tightly.
  12. Wrap the two 1/2" ends of the wire from hole 10 and the Yellow wire together. Shrink tube it.
  13. Now things change a bit, now we must connect 3 wires together. Take the wire from hole 3 and wrap it with the Orange wires. Shrink tube it.
  14. Take the wire from hole 2 and wrap it with the White wires. Shrink tube it.
  15. Now we must connect the power. The Red wire should be connected to the Red Molex wire. The Brown wire should be connected to the Black Molex wire.

  16. This is optional. You can now apply the larger Heat shrink tubes to keep the 4 wires together and more managable.
  17. You should have a hole in the back of the case for the wires to fit into. Pull the wires through the hole, and out the port holes in the front. Port 1 should have 1 Red, 1 Brown, 1 White,1 Orange, 1 Yellow. Port 2 should have 1 Red, 1 Brown, 1 White,1 Orange, 1 Purple.
  18. Now plug the wires onto the pins of the ports as follows.
  19. Port 1

    Port 2

  20. Push the Ports back into place, put the cap back on, and screw it back into the case.
  21. Finished Product.

  22. If you have Windows9x then click here for the driver. if you are using Windows NT (2000/XP) click here for the driver.

Installing ntpadxp

  1. Download the file, and unzip it.
  2. Run the setup file.
  3. Select the number of controllers you have connected to your PC.
  4. Under type Select "Nintendo".

  5. Finish the setup process.
  6. Now click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, Gaming Options.
  7. If your joystick is listed then you installed it right.

This joystick driver works with RockNES, ZNES, and KEGA. Tell me of other Emulators you know that support this driver.
